Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by MizB from Should be Reading.

Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

  • Describe one of your reading habits.
  • Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
  • What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
  • Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying about it.
  • Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!
  • Instead of the above questions, maybe you just want to ramble on about something else pertaining to books.

My rant this week is about library patrons who insist on using their cell phones.  Technology is awesome, and I understand that we are all important in our own right, but PLEASE take your call outside.  I know that it is the 21st century and most libraries where I live don’t have stodgy librarians shushing people, but be courteous to those of us who still think of libraries as places where we come to peruse the shelves in relative quiet.

I was at the library some months ago and there was a woman who was speaking on her phone near the front doors (in a language not native to where I live) and she was so loud that people actually stopped to stare at her.  One elderly woman stopped in front of her and said, “You really need to go outside.”  I wanted to give her a big hug and kiss because several of us were thinking the same thing, but not daring enough to say it to her face.

So, please be aware of your surroundings.  We don’t want to know about your doctor’s appointments, local gossip, or how your mom’s hip surgery went.  Let us peruse in peace.

  1. Hi, it’s so true and very often people don’t realize it’s a library and they create nuisance. beautiful Musing:)

  2. Here here! Call me a dinosaur, but I still don’t condone people chatting on their cells in public spaces. It’s just annoying and rude! Libraries are supposed to be quiet sanctuaries for readers. Anyone who uses a cell in a library should be escorted out the door.

Ugh, not just cellphone users, but anyone who thinks it’s okay to have a chat at normal sound levels is annoying. I find it inconsiderate and rude. Not everyone can concentrate when it’s noisy. I used to hate fellow university students who would do study sessions in the general library area – when there are rooms that can be booked for group work! Sheesh.

And people who still yell into their cellphones in general are annoying too. 😛
